The temporomandibular joint and the chewing muscles are part of a system that is sensitive to loads and habits. Changes in occlusion can affect balance, but factors such as stress, clenching/bruxism, sleep, and oral habits can also play an important role in the onset and persistence of symptoms.

About

At our clinic, we assess the relationship between occlusion (tooth contacts) and the function of the temporomandibular joint and chewing muscles. TMD may present with facial pain, muscle tension, clicking, limited mouth opening, or discomfort when chewing, and is often associated with factors such as clenching/bruxism, stress, and functional overload. Our approach always begins with a careful, individualized diagnosis.

Treatment

TMD treatment is based on a detailed clinical assessment, functional analysis, and identification of the factors that maintain pain and overload. Depending on the case, conservative measures may be recommended, such as education and self-care, habit control, therapies to relieve muscle tension, and—when indicated—an occlusal splint/guard to protect the teeth and reduce joint and muscle load. The plan is adjusted progressively, with close follow-up and a focus on stability and comfort.

The goal is to reduce pain and tension, improve jaw mobility, and restore comfort in everyday functions such as chewing, speaking, and yawning. With a personalized and controlled approach, we aim to stabilize the chewing system and reduce flare-ups, promoting better quality of life and well-being.
